Awesome mat! December 5, 2007 Harbinger (Walpole, NH) 26 out of 28 found this review helpful
I just got my mat in the mail yesterday, and from the moment I put it on the floor it was love at first sight. What a wonderful mat! I've never owned a Manduka before, but I have owned two other mats (the standard Harmony mat by Jade and another eco mat, the Earth Elements by Hugger Mugger). I was dismayed when my Earth Elements started getting abrasions all over the place after using it for less than a year (daily). So I sadly looked at other options, not thinking I'd find anything better (Prana and Gaiam make almost identical mats to the Earth Elements). Then I read about the Manduka eKO and decided to try it. Boy am I glad I did! What a great mat. It was sticky even right out of the packaging, lays super flat, and I feel incredibly grounded despite it's very generous 5mm thickness. Also, it's a bit wider and longer than regular mats, which is very nice. I've used it twice already, and I am never going to use another mat! Plus, it's 100% totally environmentally friendly, unlike the Earth Elements (made out of TPE). I'd much rather spend $65 dollars once and have the mat forever than have to buy a new mat every year because my mats keep breaking down! I highly recommend this mat.
new to yoga and I just love this mat! January 14, 2008 J. Vila (NJ) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I just started yoga, and this is my first mat so I can't really compare it to others. I started trying Ashtanga yoga and was having some difficult with the poses on the floor/towels/carpet. Once I got this mat, everything really starting working and now I'm loving yoga and also loving this mat.
I'm very happy that after much research and reading reviews I picked this mat. It was more expensive than I wanted to spend on my first mat but from other's advice, it was better to buy the best mat possible than have a collection of 3 or 4 cheaper mats that really don't match up to the quality and performance of the Manduka mats.
Yes it was smelly in the beginning, but after about 2 weeks or so the smell is gone. I'll admit it was pretty bad in the beginning. All I did was leave the mat unrolled on the back of a few chairs to give it as much air flow and air contact. It's fine now.
Yes it's heavy, but I don't travel with it so the weight is not really an issue with me. I don't mind folding it up and moving it from room to room.
I LOVE that it lays perfectly flat - right from the start. No curled edges/ends. It does want to unroll, but some Velcro straps works just fine for storage. And again, IT LAYS FLAT!!! Again, I don't travel with it so maybe the unrolling issue is a problem for transportation.
I love that it's sticky. Being new at this the stickiness helps me keep the poses and prevents me from cheating or being lazy and dragging my feet from pose to pose. I have not had any slipping problems.
I do strongly believe that this mat has helped me appreciate and enjoy yoga more. I started two months ago and hopefully it will be a lifetime of yoga with this mat. A big thanks to the Manduka company.
One more thing - I live in NJ and I got this mat with the free super saver shipping the FOLLOWING DAY! Thank you Amazon!!!
Ideal Yoga Mat March 25, 2008 Sarah PB&J (Virginia) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The eKO mat is a joy to practice on. It only took about a week of daily practice to break in. It feels great under my hands and feet and my conscious is at rest knowing that it is eco-friendly.
My only complaint is that it's slightly tricky to roll it tightly, but I've learned to use my foot at the beginning to keep the first part tight.
Love this mat April 23, 2008 Brenda Di Girolamo (PA USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is the third yoga mat i have purchased! This one is the greatest! I love it. No break in required. It offers good cushy support. It is a bit heavy and pricey but well worth it. It does have a bit of a smell, i left it open for a few days and that helped. If you are serious about yoga I highly recommend this mat!
Pure happiness, with the right perspective September 19, 2009 WorkingForLiberation (Sierra Foothills, CA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
First of all let me preface this review by saying that if you are at all bothered by SCENT of any kind, and in particular by the scent of natural rubber, then you probably shouldn't buy this mat. Before purchasing this mat, I did very thorough research on all types of yoga mats. I found that many reviewers of rubber mats have complained about the scent, but if one understands that one is buying a natural product, and a byproduct of that natural material is a particular scent, then it should be no issue.
With that said, I love this mat in every regard. It was so worth the $63 I paid for it! Practicing asana (anusara and vinyasa) on this mat makes me want to practice more and more - it has a grounding, supportive, rooting quality and it even seems to hold me better when I'm sweating a little. The traction I find far superior to synthetic "sticky mats" although for sure it took me a week or so to get used to (if you're used to synthetic mats, this is quite different)... Also, when it first arrived, my hands slipped a little in downward dog and a few others poses, but not anymore. I love that the practice surface is dense and supportive, and the underside squishy and buoyant.
In addition to accepting the scent of rubber (which, BTW, has nearly faded), comes accepting the weight. This mat is heavy for running around with, no doubt. For my purposes, I keep it unrolled in my living room all the time, because that is where I practice most. I would think if you're looking for a mat to travel with everywhere, this wouldn't be the best choice, although with its cushion factor, it might be worth it! Also this is wider and longer than standard yoga mats, which I have found heavenly, even at 5'7".
Another wonderful difference with this mat is its cleanability. Because the surface is so dense, even though dust/dirt stick to rubber really easily, when I wiped it down with a damp cloth, it cleaned up perfectly. On the contrary my boyfriend's mat, a standard sticky, got brown marks from dirty feet/hands, and I wasn't able to remove them.
The Ember color is beautiful (more muted/deep/soft than the picture shows here), a joy to stand upon and look down at repeatedly. My only reservation at all with this mat is its manufacture; I contacted Manduka trying to find out where this mat is made. I was debating between this one and the Jade Professional, mostly because I loved that Jade mats are made in the USA, even though most people seemed to say the Jade mats wear out more quickly. Manduka gave excellent customer service and responded that both these and their PRO mats are made in Germany (although they do make mat bags & other accessories in the US). However, when the mat arrived, on the label it said "made in Taiwan". I'd like to get the facts straight, and it would be nice if Manduka made the info readily available.
Beyond that, I'm taking good care of the mat and am hoping I'll never have to buy a yoga mat again. The EKO is exquisite!
